About This Calculator
- Ideal offset travel = offset × bend multiplier
- Multipliers: 10°=5.76, 22.5°=2.61, 30°=2.00, 45°=1.41, 60°=1.15
- Shrink = offset × tan(angle/2); the same ideal geometry applies to EMT and PVC conduit
- Total arc length of two bends = 2 × centerline radius × angle in radians. Add only tangent-to-tangent straight lengths to obtain developed length; this is not a bend-mark or cut-length instruction.
How this conduit offset calculator works
A conduit offset uses two identical bends to shift EMT or PVC around an obstacle. Ideal offset travel = offset height ÷ sin(angle); the multiplier is the reciprocal of sin(angle).
Shrink accounts for the conduit shortening: shrink = offset × tan(angle/2). This is ideal geometry, not a manufacturer bend-mark instruction. Use the bender’s own allowance and marking convention for field layout; see the worked travel, shrink and mark examples.
FAQ
What is a conduit offset?
Two bends shift EMT, PVC, or another conduit around an obstacle while keeping the run parallel.
What is the conduit offset formula?
Ideal offset travel = offset ÷ sin(angle). A 30° conduit offset uses a 2.00 multiplier; a 45° offset uses 1.41.
How much shrink does an offset bend have?
Use offset × tan(angle/2). At 30°, ideal shrink is about 0.268 times the offset height. A bender’s field table may use a rounded allowance; do not mix the two methods.
